Aszure Barton, a New York-based Canadian born choreographer, is the Artistic Director of Aszure & Artists. Ms. Barton has been commissioned to create works for Mikhail Baryshnikov, Hell's Kitchen Dance, the Juilliard School, Benjamin Millepied & Company, BJMDanse Montréal (Les Ballets jazz de Montréal), Hubbard Street, & Transitions Dance Company (UK), among others. Her choreography has been performed to rave reviews at the renowned Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Spoleto Dance Festival, CalPerformances, Joyce Theater, John F. Kennedy Center, Madrid's Teatro Espa–ol, The Oscar Peterson Concert Hall & Studio 54, to name a few. She is currently Artist-in-Residence at the new Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City and is currently the Resident Choreographer for BJMDanse Montréal.
Ms. Barton recently choreographed the Broadway production of "The Threepenny Opera", starring Alan Cumming, Jim Dale, Ana Gasteyer, Cyndi Lauper, and Nellie McKay (a new translation by Wallace Shawn, directed by Scott Elliott). Described as one of the most innovative chorographers of this generation, her choreography has been described as intensely musical, emotionally moving and structurally astonishing. She has received numerous grants, scholarships and awards from Arts organizations across North America, and is the recipient of the Bonnie Bird North American 2006 Choreography Award and winner of the 2003 Hubbard Street Dance Chicago's National Choreographic Competition.
Aszure has toured and performed internationally with many celebrated companies, including the National Ballet of Canada, Les Ballets jazz de Montreal, Wendy Osserman Dance Company, and Aszure & Artists. She is a graduate of the esteemed National Ballet School & received her early training at the Edmonton School of Ballet, Alberta Ballet School and the John Cranko Schule in Germany. Her film credits include choreographing and performing in: "Afternoon of the Chimeras" & "7 Universal Solvents", both of which were directed by Daniel Conrad for BRAVO Television. She has collaborated with distinguished Filmmakers, Kevin Freeman & John Price.
