Beginning Flamenco
Saturdays
2:30-4:00
Arielle Rosales, a native New Yorker, began her Flamenco studies at the age of five, under the late Andrea del Conte, who would later function as her mentor for over a decade. In 2002, she received a full scholarship to attend the Flamenco Institute of Maria Benitez in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she trained with masters Mario Maya and Maria Benitez. She has since studied in Madrid, Spain at the legendary Amor de Dios dance studio with Inmaculada Ortega, Antonio Reyes, and La China, among others, and continues her Flamenco studies in the U.S. and Spain. Along with Flamenco, Arielle has trained in other dance styles, including ballet, tap, jazz, salsa, modern (Limón Technique), contemporary, theatre dance, body percussion and hip hop, and regularly trains at Steps on Broadway.

Arielle is currently a member of several dance companies in New York and Chicago, including Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana and R.Evolucióon Latina. She has had the opportunity to perform throughout the U.S. and U.K., including venues such as Carnegie Hall and The Joyce Theatre. She has been featured on The Today Show and NPR. In 2007, Arielle showcased her choreography debut at RHYTHMS, an eyeBLINK Entertainment Production. In 2009, she stepped in for her beloved teacher, Andrea del Conte, as teacher/choreographer/director for the 2009 Annual Studio Showcase of Lotus Music & Dance. Arielle is Artistic Director of her own dance company, JuxtapOlé.

Aside from performing, one of Arielle's passions in life is teaching, which she had the privilege of experiencing at an early age; having completed a Teacher's in Training program and working as the assistant to Andrea del Conte for 5 years. She had the opportunity to teach kids at Hudson Guild and The Lower East Side Girls Club for several years. Arielle is currently on the faculty of Lotus Music & Dance Studios, The JM Rapport School, and Steps on Broadway and has been a guest teacher at Peridance Capezio Center and Ballet Hispanico. She teaches in-school residencies regularly with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana and Andrea del Conte Danza España.

Class Description:
Beginning Flamenco is designed for those with little to no Flamenco experience; however, all levels are welcome. We begin class with castanets. Leading with a warm up, students will learn exercises to strengthen their technique and discover their individual styles. We drill technique to improve both upper body work and footwork. We end the class with choreography that will vary each week in order to introduce the different "palos" of Flamenco. Arielle's choreography ranges from traditional Flamenco styles to her own personal style which is influenced by her diverse background, including Hip Hop, Salsa, and Modern dance. Students should come prepared with proper Flamenco attire; Flamenco skirt, Flamenco shoes, comfortable clothing, and castanets (if you do not own castanets, I have extras). Any long skirt and hard soled shoes (e.g. character shoes) will work as an alternative. This class is structured for open enrollment, so feel free to begin whenever you can!
