CAMILLE A. BROWN (Artistic Director of Camille A. Brown & Dancers) attended Bernice Johnson and Carolyn Devore Dance Studios, graduated from LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts, and received her BFA from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She was a member of Evidence, A Dance Company, and has performed with Rennie Harris/Puremovement, the cast of The Color Purple for Broadway Cares, and as a guest artist with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2008 and 2011. Presenting a unique choreographic voice, Ms. Brown has received commissions from AAADT, Hubbard Street II, Urban Bush Women, Ailey II, Ballet Memphis, Dallas Black, and Philadanco. Her work has been showcased at Sadler's Wells, The Apollo, The Joyce Theater, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Central Park's Summerstage, Madison Square Garden, and New York City Center's Fall for Dance Festival. Ms. Brown has choreographed for The Youth American Grand Prix Gala and New York Fashion Week. She is the first woman selected to receive The Princess Grace Award for Choreography, and has also received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and a Presidential Scholars of the Arts Award. She is currently choreographing the new musical, Fortress Of Solitude directed by Daniel Aukin. She was a movement consultant for Death Boogie - a Hip Hop Musical, directed by Jennifer McGrath, and the choreographer for The Foundry Theatre's production of Pins & Needles, directed by Ken Rus Schmoll. Most recently, she received a 2011 Bessie nomination for Outstanding Individual Performance in her work, The Evolution Of A Secured Feminine, a grant award from the National Dance Project, and is 1 of 4 choreographers selected as a 2011 Choreographic Fellow for Ailey's New Directions Choreography Lab. Brown's company returns to Jacob's Pillow this Summer and The Joyce Theater for their first solo season in January 2012.
