Musical Training: Conservatorio Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga in Bilbao, Spain, First Prize in Piano
Performance Experience: Josu has appeared as a soloist and accompanist in concerts throughout Europe, Latin America, the former Soviet Union, and the United States. Reviewers have noted the "great precision, sensitivity, and transparent quality" of his performances, and composer Aram Khachaturian, attending one of Josu's Moscow performances, called him "a very sensitive pianist and extraordinary accompanist. In the United States, he has performed at Carnegie Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, Merkin Concert Hall, and St. Patrick's Cathedral, as well as in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Josu has also appeared as a soloist with the Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, Bolivia's Orquesta de Cámara, and the Symphony Orchestra of Bilbao (Spain) among others.
Company Affiliations: Josu has been an accompanist for American Ballet Theater, Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Dance Theatre of Harlem, the School of American Ballet, and the Real Escuela de Danza in Madrid. He has worked with leading dancers and choreographers including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Cynthia Gregory, Cynthia Harvey, Susan Jaffe, Allegra Kent, Gelsey Kirkland, Rudolf Nureyev, Anna Sokolow, and Ross Stretton among many others. He recently performed with legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya at a gala in her honor in Madrid. Dancer/choreographer David Parsons has said that Gallastegui has "goldfingers" while Susan Jaffe describes his work as "deeply creative, wonderfully musical, and completely enjoyable to dance to." Mikhail Baryshnikov has called Gallastegui "a superb musician with a remarkable sensitivity for ballet."
Recordings / Other Relevant Experience: Josu has recorded a series of ballet class recordings that are used in dance studios and ballet companies around the world. This year, he is releasing his eighth ballet class CD, Change of Scene: Spanish & Latin American Music Arranged for Ballet Barre and Center. Josu's recordings are available from his company, Sugal Records. Detailed information about the series can be found at his web site. In 2006, Josu released his first general audience recording in the United States, Venezuelan Waltzes. That CD is available from www.cdbaby.com/gallastegui.
Composing Experience: Josu frequently composes, and most of his recordings contain some of his compositions. Pas de Basque is Josu's collection of original music expressly for ballet class. Allegra Kent called this class CD "one of the most beautiful ballet albums ever."
