Scott Thompson
Scott is an award winning Director/Choreographer whose work has been seen in some of the
country's best regional theatres. In his twenty year career he has been fortunate enough
to work with some of Broadway's brightest talents in over 80 productions nationwide.
In 1996 Scott founded Austin Musical Theatre and served as its Producing Artistic Director
for seven seasons. He also founded a highly respected children's performing arts academy
while in Austin which currently boasts alumni attending Yale, NYU and a host of young people
who have successfully began their careers in the professional theatre. Favorite
Directing/Choreography credits include Dames at Sea at the world famous Goodspeed Opera
House and at the Marines Memorial Theatre for which he won the prestigious San Francisco
theatre critics award as best Director and Choreographer and the Los Angeles Ovation awards
for that same production. Scott directed Tony award winner Betty Buckley in Gypsy for the
Southern Arizona Light Opera Co., famed country legend Larry Gatlin in The Music Man for
Austin Musical Theatre and Tony award winner Cady Huffman from the original cast of The
Producers in a critically acclaimed production of Damn Yankees. For the Library of
Congress in Washington, D.C. Scott choreographed a star-studded gala featuring classical
recording artist Dawn Upshaw and four time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald. In Los Angeles
Scott re-created the Broadway choreography from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas at
a special gala honoring that show's original choreographer Tommy Tune. Scott has long history
with that show having directed Whorehouse three times- in Tucson, Sacramento and finally in
the capital of Texas-Austin! Other successful directing projects include Babes in Arms,
42nd Street, Jesus Christ Superstar, Oklahoma!, Oliver, The Sound
of Music, Annie, The Pirates of Penzance, The Wizard of Oz, Bye Bye
Birdie, My Fair Lady, Sweet Charity, Fiddler on the Roof, Man of
Lamancha, Cinderella and A Chorus Line. On the east coast, Scott Directed
and Choreographed Grease for the Maine State Music Theatre which became one of the
biggest hits in that theatre's history and Anything Goes for the Downtown Cabaret
Theatre which was the inaugural production of their brand new performing arts facility.
Recently Scott directed a lavish production of Peter Schaffer's brilliant play Amadeus.
Presently Scott is directing his fourth production of Gypsy this time for the Gateway
Playhouse on Long Island (which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary) and directing a
summer musical theatre workshop for advanced high school students at Columbia University in
New York where he currently resides. He is hard at work developing several new musical
theatre projects and is co-writing a screenplay entitled The Bridesmaid.
