Ensemble goes Global!

Steps on Broadway and The Ensemble is proud to be working with Global Arts Initiative (GAIN) on their collaborative project with Ikapa Dance Theatre, a contemporary dance company based in Cape Town, South Africa. The theme of this partnership, “Peace & Reconciliation”, will be explored through dance, community outreach, and through a documentary that will be created.

This partnership is divided into three Phases:

Phase 1, May 2010
Two company members, Sara Hoenes and Kyle Mullins will travel to Cape Town for 10 days to collaborate on the creation of a new work with members of Ikapa Dance Theatre. While there, they will participate as teachers in Ikapa Dance Theatre’s outreach program, Imbewu yeKapa that teaches dance to children in the townships.

Phase 2, August/September 2010
Steps on Broadway and GAIN will provide a one-month scholarship for an Ikapa dancer to join the International Student Visa Program at Steps to further their international dance training. The dancer will also be a guest artist with the Ensemble performing in Celebrate Dance.

Phase 3, October 2010
Six Ensemble members Melodie Casta, Michael Garber, Marielis Garcia, Sara Hoenes, Nana Suzuki and Jake Warren will travel to Cape Town for 2 weeks, to finalize the collaborative piece and perform work by Cherice Barton, Donald Byrd & Andrea Miller in a co-production with Ikapa Dance Theatre. Members will once again participate as teachers in Imbewu yeKapa.

This program is made possible by a generous grant from Harkness Foundation for Dance, American Harlequin, Steps on Broadway, G&L Picard Family Foundation, Cable Audit Associates, and support from various individuals.
