Named Top 10 Colleges for Dance—College Magazine 2020, Marymount Manhattan College Dance Department uniquely provides a strong dance program, rigorous curriculum, and excellent faculty combined with a well-rounded education that comes from being part of a liberal arts college. It is the department’s philosophy that this combination offers the best preparation for the dancer to perform on and off stage.
We offer both a BFA and BA in Dance, we strongly encourage study in interrelated disciplines of Dance rich with creativity and opportunity. Our movement classes offer a rigorous approach to the physical and verbal command of dance vocabulary. Students are encouraged to develop aesthetic awareness that illuminates multicultural, intersectional, and artistic innovations, and also examines stylistic traditions and historical and cultural perspectives within a global context. Students are able to pursue a minor or a double major in other areas of the College’s curriculum.
Jan Dijkwel
Jan Dijkwel completed his BFA in Ballet Performance at the Dutch National Ballet Academy, the Netherlands after which Dijkwel performed extensively with the Dutch National Ballet. Jan received his MA in Dance/Movement Therapy from Drexel University. He has been a regular guest teacher at Ballet West. Following an invitation of the Albanian Minister of Culture, he taught, choreographed, and consulted for the Tirana Opera Ballet, Tirana College of Arts, and the Albanian Academy of Arts. Jan has set all major classical full-length ballets and is a sought-after trainer/coach for professional dancers and international ballet competitors. His work has been performed in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Jan teaches and choreographs regularly in Japan and has served as Director of multiple Summer Ballet Workshops over the years.
