In that the BFA is a professional degree, the primary focus is to offer technical training and performance experience that optimally prepares dancers for future professional careers in dance upon graduation. In meeting these demands, the unique triple-track design, affords students the opportunity to study ballet, modern and jazz with equal emphasis. Students also have the ability in their junior year, to taper their programs of study should they desire to specialize or concentrate more heavily on a particular discipline to meet specific future career goals, while still maintaining breadth in their technical foundation. Even though the BFA degree in dance places an emphasis on technique and performing, students are also assured of receiving a well-rounded education. To study dance at The University of Arizona is to have the best of both worlds–a nationally reputed dance program with a conservatory environment (in terms of the rigor and concentration), housed within an institution nationally lauded for scientific discoveries and research!
Christopher Compton is an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona School of Dance in Tucson, Arizona. He is also Co-Director of Dance at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp in Steamboat Springs, CO. He teaches Ballet Technique, Ballet Repertory, Partnering, Men’s Technique, Modern Dance, Choreography, Dance History, and Theatre Dance. Chris earned his MFA from the University of Arizona for Dance with an Emphasis in Choreography and Performance in May 2015. Prior to attending UA, Chris trained with Marcia Dale Weary at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet in Carlisle, Pa., and earned his BFA in Ballet under the tutelage of Andrew Pap at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pa. Chris had been on the faculty of many dance schools, and has been a guest teacher at many ballet schools, community colleges, and summer programs across the U.S., including the Arizona Jazz Dance Showcase in Tucson, AZ.
Chris has performed principal roles in the works of Twyla Tharp, George Balanchine, Paul Taylor, Alan Hineline, Andrew Pap, Scott Thyberg, Douglas Nielsen and Michael Williams. As a dancer for Twyla Tharp, Chris performed principal roles in the Tony-Award winning Movin’ Out. Chris was also a member of Koresh Dance Company in Philadelphia, Pa., and has been a frequent guest artist at numerous ballet companies across the U.S., including Pennsylvania Ballet, Georgia Ballet, and Lexington Ballet. Additionally, Christopher was honored perform the role of ‘Johnny,’ made famous by Patrick Swayze, in the North American Premiere of Dirty Dancing at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, On. His first job out of high school, Chris was proud to make his professional debut as a dancer in the National Tour of The Music Man. Chris has also appeared in commercials and promotional materials for Movin’ Out, Dirty Dancing, Six Flags Over Georgia, The University of the Arts, and Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet.
Chris’ choreography has been performed at The Stevie Eller Theatre in Tucson, AZ., The Drake Theatre in Philadelphia, PA., The Strings Festival in Steamboat Springs, CO., Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp in Steamboat Springs, CO., Artifact Dance Project in Tucson, AZ., as well as many ballet schools across the U.S. In 2014, Chris was presented with the prestigious Creative Achievement Award by the University of Arizona. Chris is also the proud winner of the Aleksei Judenic Ballet Prize from the University of the Arts. Christopher’s proudest achievement is being a father to John Wyatt, Jack, and Cody, his wonderful sons, and a husband to Tammy, his amazing wife.
Hayley received her early training from the Draper Center for Dance Education in upstate New York under Timothy M. Draper. She then went on to earn a BFA in Dance at the University of Arizona on a full scholarship where she had the opportunity to perform in many renowned works including the lead in George Balanchine’s, Tchaikovsky Pas De Deux and Serenade, and Ben Stevenson’s pas de deux, End of Time. During her time here, she was awarded the inaugural Hayley Meier Award for outstanding artistry across all dance forms, currently known as the Triple Threat Award.
In 2009, she became a company member of the Rochester City Ballet under the direction of Jamey Leverett. During this time, she performed numerous principal roles including Lead Russian Girl in Balanchine’s Serenade and Gerald Arpino’s pas de deux, Valentine. Hayley then went on to join River North Dance Chicago in 2011 for five seasons under the direction of Frank Chavez. It is here that she had the opportunity to perform all over the world, most notably as the lead female in Ivan Perez’s U.S. premiere of Flesh.
Hayley has also performed as a guest artist for the aerial-based company C5 ‘Create with No Limits’ under Jeremy Plummer, RPM Productions under Gordon Pierce Schmidt, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago in both of their performances of Les Troyens and My Fair Lady.
In 2017, Hayley completed a 450-hour comprehensive Pilates certification through Pilates Sports Center that focuses on preserving the classical essence of Joseph Pilates, while integrating advances in exercise science and spinal rehabilitation. Hayley is fully certified in the four main apparatus: Mat, Reformer, Wunda Chair, and Cadillac, with advanced studies in Jumpboard and pre- and post-natal Pilates. At the height of the pandemic, Hayley founded Body by Hayley, a virtual full-body Pilates Mat class that focuses on strength-building, stability, proper alignment, longevity, and connectivity to others.
From 2017-2018, Hayley became the Artist in Residence at the University of Arizona where she taught and performed for the School of Dance under the direction of Jory Hancock. She completed her Master of Fine Arts in Dance at the University in May 2020. During her time as a graduate student, Hayley was awarded the Creative Achievement Award in the College of Fine Arts, representing the School of Dance for demonstrating exceptional creativity and innovation with a passion for the arts. She is on faculty with the University as a full-time Assistant Professor of Practice and Undergraduate Advisor in the School of Dance.
