The Steps Summer Study NYC was a great experience. It introduced me to many different styles I have not had the opportunity to study. My absolute favorite part of this program was having a composition class called Creative Tools with Tiffany Rae-Fisher and various guest artists. It was really cool to have established choreographers come in each week and learn their creative methods and work with us. I love to create as much as dancing and I learned so many tools to help me do so. For example, contact improv and the manipulation of tempi. Also, being able to perform the group self-choreographed piece was the cherry on top. I realized how special an opportunity this was both the creation and the performance; it is not something that is typically part of one’s training.
Not only this class, but the program itself helped expand my movement vocabulary. I have a greater understanding of my body now from when I first started the program. I also had the chance to meet some wonderful people and make some substantial friendships. Doing the summer program made it easier for me to transition into the Steps Conservatory Program. Being a part of a program and a studio opens you up to many opportunities that are offered.
