Lainie Sakakura
LAINIE SAKAKURA, recipient of the 2015 Joe A. Callaway Award for Outstanding Choreography and the 2002 Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Choreography. As a Broadway performer, she worked exclusively in original casts, usually from workshop to Broadway: CHITA RIVERA THE DANCER'S LIFE, FLOWER DRUM SONG (revival), Tommy Tune's THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE GOES PUBLIC, THE KING AND I (1996 & 2015 revivals), and FOSSE where she worked closely with Gwen Verdon on dance reconstruction since 1994. Onstage dance captain and taught Fosse classes at old BDC starting 1996. Continued as onstage dance captain for every incarnation to Broadway where she was also credited with Dance Reconstruction 1999. Other NYC performing credits: Ballet Hispanico, Radio City Rockette, City Center Encores! and Metropolitan Opera. Honored to have recreated and staged BIG SPENDER starring Chita Rivera & Ann Reinking for Cy Coleman's memorial at the Majestic Theatre.

Ms Sakakura is a NYC based writer, director, choreographer, teaching artist, advocate for cultural diversity, inclusion, and education. Always striving for better opportunities for the next generation of BIPOC performers, she co-founded ROCA -- Rockettes of Color Alumnae, Sakachez Broadway Asian American Teens & Mentors, and co-chaired a NYC public school's Culture & Community Committee for 7 years producing and directing 25 multicultural events. Co-conceived & wrote BCEFA's RED BUCKET FOLLIES Opening Number at the New Amsterdam Theater celebrating Flower Drum Song's 60th Anniversary & Asian Americans on Broadway. Currently developing CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET a musical adaptation of New York Times Best Seller, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Book by Lainie Sakakura, Music & Lyrics by Paul Fujimoto.
