Cuban-American director and choreographer, Garcia's recent credits include Spike Lee's latest film Chi-Raq, the new hit musical CUBA LIBRE at Artists Repertory Theater, Another Word for Beauty at The Goodman Theater and Fats Waller Dance Party at Harlem Stage and Kennedy Center. Associate Choreographer to Bill T. Jones, Garcia developed FELA! On Broadway, becoming Creative Director of FELA! World Tours and FELA! The Concert. Last year she directed Salsa, Mambo Cha Cha Cha in Havana Cuba, and The Legend of Yauna at BAM. Garcia's signature storytelling integrates live music and visceral movement with interactive design and historical narrative. Her work is described as 'enormous, emotive, and furiously political.'
Garcia's movement draws inspiration from mentors including Bill T. Jones, Cecilia Marta, and Max Stone, and from the diasporic rhythms of American Jazz rooted in Africa and Latin America, creating a full-bodied, high-powered yet sensual and lyrical style. Garcia founded Organic Magnetics www.organicmagnetics.com to produce live, interactive installations by sustainable design. She co-wrote and directed I Am New York: Juan Rodriguez at El Museo del Barrio; and directed Ghosts of Manhattan: 1512-2012, an interactive history at Fort Tryon Park. Music Videos include Claudia Hayden's Havana Moods, Angelique Kidjo's Move on Up, and Seun Kuti's RISE. When she's not traveling, Maija lives in Harlem, teaches Movement for Actors at CUNY City College of New York and Contemporary dance Steps on Broadway. A member of SDC, Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, Garcia is represented by Olivier Sultan at CAA, Creative Artists Agency.
