Mickey Sakai

Advanced Beginning Hip Hop
Mikala Sakai also known as "Mickey" or "Mamisan" is a native New Yorker, born and raised in The Bronx. At the age of 5 she began studying varying dance styles such as Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Modern until the age of 14 when she began to study and train in Step and Hip Hop. She quickly realized her passion for Hip Hop, and after obtaining her B.A. she began to continue her training at Broadway Dance Center where she met Beverly Brown. She continued to train under Mrs. Brown and soon became her Assistant and substitute for many of her classes. She later met Robin Dunn and completed her remarkable F.A.C.E. workshop at Alvin Ailey- Extension Program. She also guest teaches for Mrs. Dunn, which has opened numerous doors for her to guest teach for various other events and programs at Alvin Ailey. She currently guest teaches at Broadway Dance Center and the Alvin Ailey Extension program. Mickey has choreographed for varying teen programs, private dance schools and music videos as well as live performances.

With a visionary gift of movement Mickey weaves a story through not only the beat, but through her interpretation of the lyrics and the stories they tell. With her belief that Hip Hop crosses all boundaries and stereotypes and feeds the Mind, Body and especially the Soul she inspires all of her students to go beyond the typical "norm". Mickey's drive and love for dance comes from a place of purity and passion as a choreographer, teacher and performer. She continues to create and teach, promoting each student to dance not only with their feet but with their hearts and to always dance from within.
