David Marquez

While dancing on Broadway in the original production of Kander and Ebb’s Kiss of the Spider Woman, David Marquez choreographed a dance entitled “Galileo” by The Indigo Girls for the BC/EFA Gypsy of the Year Competition and WON The Gypsy of the Year Award for Best In Show. That evening changed his life. By the end of the week he had been offered work as a Broadway choreographer, a world tour, had a feature in the New York Times and got representation from the William Morris Agency. That performance also changed the competition as hopeful choreographers now saw it as a launching platform for legitimate choreography careers. Since then David has gone on to choreograph for Broadway, television and concert. But his heart remains in the theater.
David’s Broadway choreography includes: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Gershwin’s Fascinating Rhythm (AriZoni Award; Best Choreography in a Musical). He was the dance consultant on the Broadway play Stanley and has choreographed at the world famous Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Television: PBS Great Performances production of My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies, starring Julie Andrews, Liza Minnelli and Jennifer Holiday; “Sexy Back” for The 2006 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show starring Justin Timberlake, as well as several ABC daytime dramas including One Life To Live and All My Children.
He has danced with Michael Jackson, Chita Rivera, Jennifer Lopez, Vanessa Williams, and the C&C Music Factory; worked with Debbie Allen, Julie Andrews, Kristen Bell, Orfeh, Lin Manuel Miranda, Patrick Wilson, Sara Ramirez and Elaine Stritch; and choreographed for Karen Ziemba, Bebe Neuwirth, Ann Reinking, Anna Kendrick, the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, and the list goes on.
His professional career spans almost three decades. He has worked in opera, film, Off-Broadway, regional, concert, television, and the stage; in the round, thrust and black box, indoors and out, national and international, from original works to classics and old standards, from A Chorus Line to West Side Story, Hollywood to Broadway.
He has choreographed numerous charity events for BC/EFA, namely The Gypsy of the Year and The Easter Bonnet Competition.
David has appeared on Broadway in Kiss of the Spider Woman (with Chita Rivera and Vanessa Williams) as well as the national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar (with Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, Dennis De Young, and Irene Cara.) and music videos including the 1990’s hit “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).” David can be seen in the documentary film Every Little Step.
As a teacher, David has taught all over the world including Australia, Argentina, Italy, France, Ireland, The United Kingdom, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland. He has more than thirty years of experience teaching all ages and levels. He is known for his intense passion and high standards. His choreography is challenging and musical, dramatic and joyful, and extremely varied.
