Headshot Laura Shapiro

Laura Shapiro is a choreographer/performer whose somatic teaching expertise includes Pilates Mat. She enjoys the challenges-and rewards-of working with students of all levels, from beginners to professionals, helping each of them to further develop their understanding of their “instrument” in order to enhance performance presence as well as technical abilities.

Pilates Mat is an excellent modality for integrating and synergizing the breath of the energy body with the alignment of the skeletal body while lengthening and strengthening the muscular body, enhancing one’s movement in everyday life, in class as well as onstage. Shapiro is certified in IM=X Pilates Basic and Super-Advanced Floor Work and has taken post-certification training in Prenatal/Postpartum Exercise Based on Pilates Principles, Pilates Mat Applications for Scoliosis and Conditioning for Dancers at Kinected/The Kane School. With fifteen years of experience teaching Pilates Mat, she likes to offer individual attention to each student while simultaneously engaging the whole person and the whole group.

Choreography/performance Shapiro’s independent artistic journey has taken her from New York to the Northwest, Asia and Europe-and back to New York. In recent years in NYC her group and solo choreography has been presented in New York City by the BAAD!, DraftWork at Danspace Project, Dixon Place, Lower East Side Festival of the Arts at Theater for the New City, Movement Research at the Judson Church and The Construction Company. Most recently, she performed at the BAAD!Ass Women’s Festival In March 2023 and received a Puffin Foundation grant for her NYFA-sponsored project in June 2023.
