University at Buffalo
Getzville, NY
The University at Buffalo is home to the UB Dance Program, a nurturing and challenging artistic community where Versatility Matters. We value education fueled by performing and teaching experiences that prepare students for a variety of careers in the professional world of dance and beyond.
Our BA and BFA programs include comprehensive training in jazz, tap, modern, and ballet, along with courses in choreography, dance on film, improvisation, hip hop, musical theatre dance, social dance, teaching methods, movement analysis, and dance kinesiology. Unique to our program is a focus on comparative jazz dance styles, from rooted and authentic movement to codified, commercial, and theatrical forms.
UB’s status as a flagship research university means that many of our students pursue a second major or minor, mixing interdisciplinary studies with their dance education. Combined with this strong liberal arts foundation, UB Dance graduates leave our program as well-rounded, resourceful artists ready to thrive in today’s diverse dance world.
UB Dance majors perform often, create original work, and connect with guest artists from across the globe. Our graduates shine on Broadway and national tours; in venues like Cirque du Soleil, Radio City Music Hall, and Disney; in nationally and internationally renowned companies; on film and television; dancing backup for major musical artists; and in theme parks, cruise ships, and industrials. Others build careers in education, arts management, dance science, and more.
Chanon Judson
Chanon invites learners and practitioners to explore Jazz, a rich and relevant art form, rooted in African American traditions. Concentrations include founding social and movement traditions, relatedness to musical structure, and ensemble practice where dancers work collaboratively while maintaining the distinction of their solo movement “voice.” Key areas of study will include improvisation, shedding or solo study, embodied listening and collaborative practice.
