This one-of-a-kind program prepares students for a career in musical theatre with a thoughtfully curated blend of performing arts disciplines. In addition to rigorous dance training, students study acting, music, and voice. Our faculty of working artists guides students toward their unique expression and provides tools and techniques to support artistic agency. As a social justice institution, Roosevelt is committed to developing artist/citizens interested in using their art to make positive change in the world.

Tammy Mader

Tammy Mader is an Associate Professor of Musical Theatre at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts, and director of their one-of-a-kind Musical Theatre Dance BFA program. Previously, she was on faculty at Columbia College Chicago, Lou Conte Dance Studio, the School at Porchlight Music Theatre, The American Rhythm Center, and ChiArts; the Chicago High School for the Arts. Tammy is a musical theatre performer, director, and award-winning choreographer. She is the creator of Active 8s, a dance/acting hybrid pedagogy, and a tap partnering pedagogy calle 4-Legged Tap. She holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Point Park University. She is an active member of Actors’ Equity Association, and Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, and has been affiliated with the American Guild of Musical Artists.

Shanna VanDerwerker

Shanna VanDerwerker is currently an Assistant Teaching Professor of Musical Theater Dance at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts and on faculty at Visceral Dance Center in Chicago. She was the Associate Director/Choreographer to Deidre Goodwin for Heartbreak Hotel and Beehive The Musical and her Associate Choreographer for Catch Me If You Can, and Associate Choreographer of the World Premiere of Always Something There for Tyler Hanes all at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, IL. Shanna’s own creative credits include: Co-director and choreographer of SpongeBob The Musical TYA (Marriott Theatre), thirteen shows choreographed at The Fireside Theatre in Fort Atkinson, WI, favorites include Matilda (co-director), Saturday Night Fever, 42nd St, Newsies, and Singin’ In The Rain. For CCPA she has choreographed Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin and Wonderful Town, Renascence at Illinois Wesleyan University (Choreographer), Director and Choreographer of 9 to 5 at Tantrum Theatre, and Head Over Heels at Columbia College Chicago. Shanna has choreographed for Porchlight Music Theatre, Mercury Theater Chicago (Jeff Award Winning Spamalot), the Chicago premiere of Lysistrata Jones for Refuge Theater Project (Jeff Nomination). Associate Choreographer to Christopher Gattelli for over 20 years, including on Broadway’s High Fidelity. Selected performance credits: Wicked (Broadway and 1st National Tour), Mary Poppins, Singin’ In The Rain, H2$ (Fireside Theatre), Evita (Drury Lane) Kiss Me, Kate (TUTS), dre.dance company, and Walt Disney World.
