Leandro da Silva
Leandro da Silva (Professor Alegria) was born in Salvador, Bahia (Brazil). He currently lives in New York City (NY), where he teaches capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian martial art incorporating dance and acrobatics) and Silva Technique, his own unique blend of afro-brazilian dance, capoeira and contemporary dance (in the style of Dance Brazil). A professionally trained dancer of various styles and capoeirista, Leandro da Silva has toured internationally for several years as a member of the highly acclaimed company Dance Brazil (9 years NY/Bahia), Brazarte Dance Company (Miami-FL), Cleo Parker Robinson Dance (Denver-CO), Orquestra Popular da Bahia (Brazil), and Ballethnic Dance Company (Atlanta-GA). He has also participated as director and choreographer of National Black Arts Festival (Atl-GA) and assistant choreographer of Fox’s hit series “So You Think You Can Dance” (Canada).

Class Description Open Brazilian Fusion
Silva Technique is a fusion of Brazilian Contemporary dances with a strong emphasis on Capoeira movements, and modern dance foundations. It has been revolutionizing dance in the world today and has been made popular by professional companies such as Dance Brasil. Modern dance technique has for many years shown the quality and harmony of dance and the body. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial arts fighting style, but at the same time is a dance incorporating your swing or “ginga” and acrobaticism. Together the mix of Brazilian rhythms and accents with Modern dance technique and Capoeira are forming a new comtemporary movement. Previous dance experience is recommended.

During its early years, Capoeira was disguised as a dance in order to be practiced openly. Today, it is widely known and practiced in more than 60 nations around the world.
