BOURNONVILLE BALLET TECHNIQUE
Tuesday & Thursday 4:30-6:00pm
Regular Class rates apply • Click here to purchase class

In my teaching of the Bournonville School I focus on the technique behind the steps and the many, many details which is hidden in them and the way to perform them as Bournonville would have liked it (as far as we know). I work with the natural grace, the lightness and the softness, strength, and humor behind the steps. In addition, the training requires concentration which helps to develop the focus of the dancers on step combinations and developments. The Barre is based on Vaganova and focused on placements, lengthening, and slow and fast legs. In the center we focus on the Bournonville Schools which consists of some wonderful combinations of steps.
The Choreographic style, Repertory class:
What is so special about The Bournonville style? Dancing Bournonville is just as hard as dancing Petipa or Balanchine. It just demands completely different abilities of the dancer. In other words, the style of Bournonville’s choreography is very special: un-artificial grace, combined with talent of understating even the biggest steps, discretion of mime and heavy dramatic impact. We will work with the repertoire from La Sylphide/ Napoli/ Flower Festival in Genzano/La Ventana/The Kings Volenteers. (A short warm up ( barre) and then repertoire.)
Bournonville Mime class:
In Bournonville’s ballets, nearly all of which are dramatic story ballets, mime plays a significant role and has its own style and form. Bournonville considered that gesture should be simple and natural, almost like the gesture, which accompanies and enhances everyday speech. He expected the artist to express inner feelings and thoughts through outer visible movements, the phrasing of which should be rhythmically clear and precise so that the audience may interpret these feelings as moving pictures to which they made the words themselves. We will work with scenes from Kermesse in Brugge/The Kings Volunteers on Amager/La Sylphide.
